Welcome to Frank L Appleyard
Frank L. Appleyard is a retired civil engineer who was born in 1941. He is married with a son, daughter and a grandson. Qualified as a Chartered Civil Engineer, he worked in local government until he was made redundant and took early retirement in 1996.Being born, bred and living near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, one of the heartlands of male voice singing, (not only in England but the U.K.), and the now fast-disappearing traditions of church and chapel choirs, it is not surprising that he has always had a life-long interest in music.
He first sang in the choir at his local parish church, St. Aidan’s, Skelmanthorpe, at the age of nine and has for many years sung in two well-established choirs: the Skelmanthorpe Male Voice Choir and the Huddersfield Choral Society.
While being a performer (eschewing solo singing, despite being a member of the Second Bass sections of both groups for more than 40 and 25 years respectively), his main interest is in composing, having studied with Philip Honnor after retiring.
Frank has “catholic” tastes, though he enjoys the music of the Gothic period most and modern jazz least!
He has composed music in many genres although mostly on a small scale.
Despite having several of his male voice compositions performed locally, and having had other works premiered at the Yorkshire Composers’ Festivals, Frank realises that a composer needs publicity and performances to attain wider recognition; with this in mind this website has been established to make his compositions available to anyone who is sufficiently interested.
